Bukijutsu 武器術
Bukijutsu means "weapon technique/skill/science" and includes the use of any weapon or effector used as a tool for aiding in the additional damage to an opponent.
Through the study of correct taijutsu 体術 (body technique/skill/science), it makes no difference what tool is in your hand because the natural biomechanics, do not change. This means there is no need for a separate class on the spear, the bo, sword, knife or firearms because it's all the same. While other martial arts may teach these as individual entities, this is merely a cash grab because authentically, there is no difference in the usage once there is an understanding of natural, functional mobility and the use of the body.
While the risk is extremely rare of someone attacking you outside the dojo realm with a sword or spear, we study these ancient weapons because they teach distance and where it is safe or dangerous to enter. Each weapon has its own advantage and disadvantage and space that it is efficient. Because of this, we study all ranges, all spaces, and all weapons; including the most dangerous, hidden weapons. Common tools we look at in class are:
• 大小 Daisho – Pairing of weapons
• 半棒 Hanbo – 3’ staff
• 杖 Jo – 4’ staff
• 刀 Katana – Sword
• 剣 Ken – Straight sword
• 小太刀 Kodachi – Short sword
• 薙刀 Naginata – Glaive
• 六尺棒 Rokushaku bo – 6’ bo
• 太刀 Tachi – Curved battlefield sword
• 短刀 Tanto – Small sword marketed as a dagger
• 打ち刀 Uchigatana – Striking sword
• 槍 Yari – Spear
